Tracking affiliates via the API

I’m hoping there’s another way to track affiliates via the API . We followed this help article (Track referral activity via the API | Max Classic) and it worked great… however my client would prefer to not have the word “affiliate” in the URL . Is there way to get around this, change the word affiliate, or track our own custom cookie?

I know that you can change field labels but I’m not sure if that use carries over to it’s tracking.
